It’s rare to find artists that commit so fiercely to anonymity. Artists like Daft Punk, SBTRKT, MF DOOM, even Kiss have used face paint or masks to obscure themselves and keep the focus purely on their music. What’s unusual is finding an artist committing to that ethos in country music, a genre that relishes loud artists that stir the pot constantly. However, country is also the music of desperados, lonely rangers and mysterious cowboys bathed in the orange glows of a fire and sunset. The latest to emerge from that left field is Orville Peck, a Canadian artist who dons bespoke Lone Ranger masks and keeps mainly to himself. His debut album Pony is an intimate portrait of what he calls the “outlaw cowboy”. While he may not have a lot of songs out yet, we’ve put together a collection of some of his works as well as other artists that can blend in with Orville’s unique take on country. Y’all enjoy yourselves!
