Trying to pinpoint Yaeji down to a specific style is a little tricky. On one hand, she can come off as an R&B crooner, with her crystal-like voice floating over muted drums. On the other, she remains just as smooth, icy even, but now with the sharp confidence of a rapper, trying to get you moving to her grimy baselines. The one constant is her crisp falsetto switching between her native Korean and English as well as a keen ear for crossing over genres. Indeed, her influences range from deep house to trap, with plenty of artists from her local scene joining in on the fun. This New Yorker shows us the best of what it’s like to live in that melting pot and demonstrates how she can still maintain her roots while growing beyond them. Here’s a collection of some of my favorite tracks for her, including some off her newest album WHAT WE DREW.
